NATIONAL STUDY: Holy Cross Hospital Named Among the Top Five Percent in the Nation for Overall Orthopedic Services for the Eighth Consecutive Year

2014 Healthgrades Awards for Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale

Ft. Lauderdale, FL (October 21) – Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale  today announced that it is among the top five percent in the nation for Overall Orthopedics Services for the eighth year in a row (2008-2015) and Joint Replacement for the 10th consecutive year (2006-2015) as measured by lowest risk-adjusted complications.  This recognition has been awarded through this year’s evaluation from Healthgrades, the leading online resource helping consumers make informed decisions in order to find the right doctor, the right hospital and the right care.

Every year Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at over 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 33 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.  In addition to being recognized with both the Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award and the Joint Replacement Excellence Award for the ninth consecutive year, Holy Cross orthopedic services also received 5-star ratings in the areas of total knee replacement, total hip replacement, hip fracture treatment and spinal fusion surgery.  A 5-star rating indicates that Holy Cross Hospital’s clinical outcomes are better than expected when treating the condition or conducting the procedure being evaluated.

The Healthgrades 2015 Report to the Nation highlights disparity in hospital performance for specific conditions and procedures and the impact that this variation has on health outcomes as well as increased costs and lengths of stay.  For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 40 million Medicare-patient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, assessing hospital performance relative to each of 33 common conditions and procedures.

“While Holy Cross Hospital has been one of the most trusted names in healthcare for nearly 60 years, our outstanding physicians, commitment to research and new technology in Orthopedics has kept us at the forefront,” said Holy Cross Hospital President and CEO Patrick A. Taylor, M.D.  “This recognition is a tribute to the dedication of our physicians, nurses, therapists and staff to deliver high quality care while continuing to pioneer state-of-the-art treatments and therapies.”

Holy Cross orthopedic surgeons serve on design teams for the latest knee and shoulder implants, and the hospital’s Chief of Orthopedic Surgery, Jonathan Levy, is the only South Florida active member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons.

The Holy Cross Hospital orthopedic team was the first in the world to use MAKOplasty® for partial knee resurfacing and the first in South Florida to use MAKOplasty® for total hip replacement.

“As Americans take increasing responsibility when it comes to their health, it is more important than ever for consumers to access objective measures of quality when selecting a physician and hospital,’ said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer, Healthgrades. “Consumers who select a physician associated with a hospital with Healthgrades 5-star performance in a specific procedure or condition can potentially improve their health outcomes and reduce costs.”
